It is Well with My Soul

Our "It is Well" Christian t-shirt, designed by Southern Couture, was inspired by the faith-filled words from the beloved hymn "It is Well with My Soul". The hymn was written in 1873 by Horatio Spafford after painful personal tragedy. Spafford suffered financial ruin caused by the massive 1871 Chicago fire, and was devastated by a tragic shipwreck that claimed the lives of his four young daughters ages 2,5,9, and 11. Spafford penned the words to the hymn in prayer as he sailed over the location where their ship went down. His serene declaration of assurance and trust in the goodness of the Lord amidst his sorrow and heartache has given hope, peace, and comfort to countless Christians for more than a century. Scripture reminds us that in times of personal turmoil, we do not have to walk through the darkness alone. Psalm 121:1-2 reads "I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth." Imagine...God, who spoke the universe into existence, faithfully walks with us along the way, in both our joyous moments as well as our valley of shadows. The secure knowledge of His unfailing presence brings peaceful reassurance and grants us strength for the journey, allowing us the courage to say "It is well with my soul."

As a word of warning, however, wearing the It is Well With My Soul t-shirt will undoubtedly cause the hymn to be endlessly stuck in your head throughout the day. Happens to me without fail every single time. All things considered, perhaps that's actually a good thing. Read on to view the lyrics provided below.
